- After Hurricane Dorian pushed past Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, it retained its strength and has continued to intensify over open water.
- NECHAMA staff are preparing assets in anticipation of mobilizing into the region once the storm has passed, and it is safe to do so.
After Hurricane Dorian pushed past Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, it retained its strength and has continued to intensify over open water. Current forecasts indicate the storm will likely make landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm, the same intensity as Hurricane Irma in 2017. While there is still some uncertainty regarding exactly where the storm will hit along the Southeast coast, there is little doubt regarding the danger it poses. The National Hurricane Center is warning of life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds which may prolong as the storm slows upon landfall.
NECHAMA staff are preparing assets in anticipation of mobilizing into the region once the storm has passed, and it is safe to do so. We are in touch with local partners and communities to quickly assess damage, locate a base of operations, and begin to assist.
