Meet Ann-Marie and Sally: Neighbors, Friends, and Dedicated Volunteers

Meet Ann-Marie and Sally, neighbors, friends, and dedicated NECHAMA volunteers from Asheville, North Carolina. Both originally from Cincinnati, they connected through a neighborhood book club in Asheville and discovered a shared passion for community service. Ann-Marie, a social worker, and Sally, a second-grade teacher, bring compassion and a strong desire to give back to their volunteer work.

They started volunteering with NECHAMA after hearing about the organization from another volunteer and finding them on the HandsOn Asheville website. They've been consistent volunteers ever since, aiming for once a week. Ann-Marie recalls her first day, six months after Hurricane Helene, noting, "I was drawn in by how welcoming, warm, and compassionate the team leads and group were. Everything is so well-organized and the team leads provide great instruction and are so patient."

Though neither are Jewish, both women appreciate NECHAMA's inclusivity. Sally shared, "I love that when they give the intro, they make a point to say all faiths are welcome. The people we’ve met all have the shared value of wanting to help others." They both emphasize the continued need for help in the area, urging potential volunteers: "If you think we don’t need you anymore, we do... If you have the time and want to get out of your comfort zone and learn new skills, we still need so much help here."

The inspiring commitment of volunteers like Ann-Marie and Sally serves as a powerful reminder of why our work is so essential. Just as their dedication brings hope and healing to those in need, your financial support allows us to continue our vital mission.
