Russian River Floods Response
Sonoma County, California
March - April 2019
A slow-moving storm brought heavy rainfall across Northern California, causing the Russian River to exceed 45 feet, over 14 feet above flood stage. An estimated 2,000 homes were damaged in Sonoma County. Towns including Guerneville and Monte Rio were turned into inaccessible islands. NECHAMA deployed staff and an AmeriCorps NCCC team, helping 10 families through phase 1 of getting their homes and lives back. The team described the tight-knit river communities as some of the most welcoming they had ever responded to.
