Hurricane Maria - Puerto Rico Recovery

Puerto Rico
February 2018 - August 2019

NECHAMA launched an extended rebuild project in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island in September 2017. Teams worked in communities including Guaynabo, Loiza, and other municipalities, repairing concrete roofs, building new tin roofs, and restoring homes for families like Eusebio, Carlos, Sol, and Tata. The project partnered with SUNY and CUNY universities, hosting hundreds of college student volunteers each summer. NECHAMA also worked alongside TOV Volunteer Network, AmeriCorps members, and NCSY Relief Missions. The project also included agricultural development, mangrove restoration, and forest restoration work in partnership with local organizations.
