Hurricane Ida Response
Louisiana
August 2021 - August 2023
On August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall twice along the Louisiana coastline as a powerful Category 4 storm, bringing life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds, and dangerous rainfall and flooding. The storm caused widespread loss of power throughout Louisiana following the collapse of a tower carrying key transmission lines.
NECHAMA's Louisiana program in response to Hurricane Ida was active in the St. Charles Parish area through December 2023. Staff and volunteers assisted families with mucking and gutting homes, debris removal, and demolition of structures damaged beyond repair. Partners including NCSY Relief Missions, Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, and AmeriCorps NCCC teams joined the effort.
