Rhode Island Update April 23, 2010

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

JFRIRhode Island Update:

NECHAMA has been very busy helping many flood victims who were affected by the historic Rhode Island floods these past couple of weeks. Though flood victims are slow to register, we have helped almost 20 home owners restore their homes to a healthy and clean environment so that they can rebuild.

We have been partnering with the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island and the Jewish Community Center to help feed and house our volunteers along with coordinating any other efforts that flood victims or volunteers need. We have had over 50 volunteers to date who have worked with us.
Please click on the links below to see that the RI media has been engaged in our efforts and have helped us to educate the community that help free of charge is available to those who are in need of our services

NECHAMA is planning to remain in Rhode Island until May 7th unless the situation changes. If you are available to volunteers, please contact Amy at acytron@nechama.org, if your schedule doesn’t allow for time off, your donations are very much appreciated.

Before and after

Before and after

NECHAMA assists Rhode Island flood victims. Volunteers are needed!
As many of you know by following national news reports, the Northeast has been devastated by flooding. The Providence and Cranston areas of Rhode Island were hit the hardest. Damage is wide spread to homes and businesses. Numbers are still being tabulated but the latest numbers that NECHAMA has seen are the following:

*Over 200,000 people have been affected
* Over 13,000 requests to FEMA have been taken for financial assistance
* Over 300 home owners have requested emergency assistance with the United Way to help make their homes habitable again.

Dan Hoeft our Operation’s Manager just returned today from scouting the area and meeting with other Emergency Managers. Along with the Emergency Managers, The Jewish Federation has asked NECHAMA for help. Dan along with 3 others will be leaving late Wednesday or early Thursday of this week to bring our trucks and trailers to the affected areas.

NECHAMA volunteers are needed to muck starting the week of April 12th. At this time specific details of the deployment are being finalized. We will update you as soon as we have more information via e-mail. We anticipate housing to be provided by the local community. All indications appear that we will be deploying for at least four weeks.

If you are able to travel to this area, please start thinking about your schedules, if you are unable to travel, remember that financial help is appreciated also. We have estimated that this one deployment will cost NECHAMA $25,000 or greater. Your donations will help us restore hope to those who have been hit the hardest!
