Herzl Camp Provides New Nechama Volunteers
Nechama recently visited Herzl Camp in Webster, WI to demonstrate its disaster response capability and give about 32 campers an opportunity to get hands-on experience with its equipment. Yamit Tarragon, Program Director, hosted the visit for the B'Yachad ('Together') division of 14-16 year olds. Perry Witkin and Gene Borochoff led the demonstration with a chain saw and allowed a number of the campers to hold a running pressure washer. They also talked about other various pieces of equipment used to cleanup from floods and tornados. Michael Morris, Nechama Director talked about compassion for humanity in the Jewish tradition, and brought sources from the Torah pointing to a Jew's obligation to perform the mitzvah (deed) of Tikkun Olam (rebuilding the world through helping others in need). Herzl Camp was instumental in sending many campers to help in the Siren tornado cleanup of 2001. Since then Nechama has been fostering a special relationship with Herzl in the hope to develop a new generation of young volunteers. It also anticipates that some of the campers will take the Nechama message back to their communities and possibly influence the starting of other Nechama chapters in the Midwest.
